Storm Witch Mirror - salvaged glass from Capital One Calcasieu Marine tower Lake Charles Louisiana
A very special mirror to adorn your home 🖤 A solid piece of mirrored glass from the now demolished Capital One (formerly Calcasieu Marine) building in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Simply framed and suspended from brass chain. A poignant symbol of the city’s unwavering resilience, even during the most challenging times.Â
On August 27, 2020, Hurricane Laura, a Category 4 storm, made landfall. The merciless damage inflicted onto the city of Lake Charles and the surrounding areas forever changed the landscape and lives of the people who call this area home. Everyone affected by this storm will never forget her wrath and the devastation left behind.
Only 43 days later, on October 9, 2020, Hurricane Delta, a Category 2 storm, cruelly swept through the city leaving behind even more havoc and heartbreak. The damaged sustained by this beautiful structure was too extensive and her fate was sealed.Â
Constructed in 1982, The Calcasieu Marine / Capital One building was a shimmering tower of ethereal pale green glass. After the storms, she stood abandoned for the next four years with a pale and ghostly presence, quietly watching over her city. On September 7, 2024, this 375 feet tall pillar of light was reduced to rubble in seconds. Watching her fall was a surreal and emotional experience. I will miss her most at golden hour.Â
I collected this glass from the mud and debris left behind after Hurricane Laura. It is still in the same condition that Mother Nature gifted it to me in. It will have imperfections such as scratches, chips, and/or cracks. The shape has not been altered, only the edges were smoothed to prepare it for framing. I constructed the simple distressed black frame and the top hanging loop by hand. I selected heavy solid brass antique chain to accent the moody aesthetic of this piece.Â
The supply of this glass is extremely limited. I have a small collection, some of which I’m choosing to keep. I’m opting to leave these pieces in their most pure and natural state, as I believe they are best remembered that way. There is beauty to be found in even the most broken and heartbreaking circumstances 🖤
Approximate dimensions: The glass measures 4.25 x 4 inches, not including the hanging chain. With the hanging chain, it measures 7 inches from top to bottom.Â
